Do you ever wish you were more creative... or think that you just weren't born with the crafty gene? I've learned over my years of "dabbling" that creativity and art are just like anything else. You have to PRACTICE. Sure, some people are more geared toward creativity and might have more of a natural talent for making beautiful art, but I'm a firm believer that EVERYONE needs a little creativity in their life.
These are my top 3 tips for incorporating a creative practice:
#1 Try out new things! Even if you don't think you'll like it or be good at it, just try. That's part of the process... exploring new things IS creative even on it's own. It's like I always tell me 7-year-old when trying new dinner items, "the worst thing that can happen is you don't like it". ;)
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Adult coloring books
Decorate cookies (my personal favorite)
Paint (check Pinterest for tutorials)
Try a new recipe
#2 Don't get tied to the outcome. There's no right or wrong and you literally can not fail... Like, even if you "Pinterest fail" big time (been there, done that) you're still trying something new and using the creative space in your brain. So you're winning even when you're losing! haha Best case scenario, you find a new hidden talent and something to be passionate about. Totally worth it either way.
#3 Enjoy the process. Sounds obvious, but I'm serious! The other night I was trying to make Valentine cookie samples for a photo shoot and I was in a "business mindset" (aka I had a deadline and a marketing calendar to stick to) and I made the lamest cookies... I really hated them and threw them away. So the next night I poured myself a glass of wine, turned on my favorite season of New Girl, and gave myself some space to create what inspired me. Guess what? I felt relaxed and refreshed afterwards AND the cookies are CUUUUTE (stay tuned, I'll start sharing sneak peeks this week on Instagram).
